We wanted to share a little behind the scenes at Elemental and how we have continued to perform during Covid-19, to do this we called on Jerry Diender, MD and co-founder, who has been at the forefront to ensure that our team is working at full capacity so that Elemental continues to deliver great quality of work we always have.
At the start of 2020, we had a completely different vision to where the year would take us. Being in the midst of a national pandemic was definitely not something we expected. I mean, this is the kind of stuff you see in the movies, right?
At Elemental, we have always enjoyed working in an office environment, being able to enjoy a cup of coffee before we get the day started, having a quick round of table tennis to loosen up the joints and quite simply, being in the presence of one another. I believe this has been the foundation of the culture that Angelo and I have built over the last 15 years.
In the midst of Covid-19, we are obligated to work remotely and rely on digital solutions to deliver a similar experience. With that being said, I thought it would be a great idea to share some insight into our lockdown experience and what we are doing as a company to keep spirits high.
Some of what we have implemented
I believe that open and honest communication is vitally important. No matter the hurdle our team faces we try our best to accommodate them and our clients as much as we can. Essentially, Angelo and I have always had an open-door policy door albeit a virtual one, in these times.
Keeping it personal
Being in lockdown, we underestimate the fun times we have as a team. Being able to enjoy a cold beer while playing some pool on a Friday afternoon. These are moments we won’t take for granted in the future. Every Monday morning we have a video call with the team (kids and pets invited too!). This has been a great way to keep up to date with one another and share fun activities which were had over the weekend.
To help distract the team from being confined to their homes I challenged the team to think of something that we could all do and enjoy doing. We came up with a cool photography challenge. Each week we focus on a new subject which we then photograph 10 different ways. This is all for the fun of it, no winners or losers.
Maintaining a strong work ethic
While working remotely, everyone faces their own daily hurdles. From tutoring the kids, caring for newborn babies or even the distraction of pets, working at full capacity has been challenging.
The team and I developed solutions that allow us to monitor performance on tasks in a manner that is positive, we have never been a company who micromanages. I have also been lucky enough to have a team who has given 110% to ensure we keep the wheels turning efficiently.
The process is a collaborative one, Angelo and I have freed up more of our time to be as involved as ever to assist our team and to motivate them where needed.
We believe this experience has not only made us appreciate the finer things in life but brought us closer as a team and we are excited to see what the future holds.
Jerry has briefly highlighted what we have been up to behind the scenes, which has proven to be the fundamental reason behind the success in keeping things full steam ahead and our team as motivated as ever!
Our team is slowly starting to return to the office back to the ‘new normal’ side of things. We have put together a series of strict measures that not only adhere to the regulations but also make it an extra safe and secure working environment for our team.
